Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean of Life Sciences
I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Songyeon Kim and my student number is 20346474. I am an upcoming third year student. I am writing this petition letter to drop ANAT 215 (F23) and GLPH 271 (W24) and ask for credit standing in CHEM 281 (F23), BCHM 218 (W24), MICR 221 (W24), and CHEM 282 (F24).
The extenuating circumstance has started from last year November. I underwent sleep deprivation, lack of motivation to study, fear of my future failure, fluctuation of feelings, and frequent sadness. I predicted that I may be undergoing burn-out. I expected that it will be temporary and would not affect my academics, but I failed a course and got bad grade. Ultimately this lead me to book my first counseling session to talk with a professional last January. During counseling, I talked about several aspects about my life, including the challenges and differences from my first year at university. I initially came here to study a topic I am interested in, but since losing motivation, my life becames indifferent, and I thought I have no reason to study. I was in a dilemma where I didn’t want to neither go back to my home country nor continue my studies here.
After the first counseling session, I didn’t recover right away. My symptom continued to develop into depression, inability to control my feelings, constant feeling of being a burden, fatigue, and lacking motivation and contentment. Since I wasn’t easily recovering, my counselor recommended me to see a doctor and, I have been meeting with my doctor since May and counseling sessions at the same time. Overall, my symptom impacted my whole 2nd year. I spent most of my day with depression. It was difficult to meet people, focus on fencing practice, and from sleep deprivation and feeling down the most at night, my sleeping pattern changed causing me to attend to less class. This also impacted the submission of assignment, resulting in more frequent absences.
The reason why I didn’t attend counseling earlier in fall term or reach out for more help was because it was my first time experiencing mental illness. I expected my feelings and situation would be temporary but it continued to persist. I didn’t want to give up both my academics and my life, and I decided to start attending counseling session starting the winter term. Currently, I am on medication to deal with my depression, and I have frequent counseling sessions to minimize the impact of current health conditions, on my current academics. Unfortunately, my symptom remains, but I am working through my condition to set myself for success moving forward. For success going forward, I have increased medication dosages on request to the doctor to deal with my depression. I have also registered for long accommodation to better prepare me to handle assignments and contribute to succeeding in my academics. I continue to attend to more counseling sessions to make myself feel better and work through my emotions. I have created a study planner to plan out assignments and deadlines to overall contribute to better time management and organization. This plan will allow me to reach my academic goal and allow me to handle future challenges better.
Going forward, I hope to utilize my resources to overcome my struggles and prepare myself for academic success. I would like to thank you for taking the time to read this letter and I am grateful for you consideration towards my appeal. I hope you can consider my petition to drop ANAT 215 (F23) and GLPH 271 (W24) and ask for credit standing in CHEM 281(F23), BCHM 218 (W24), MICR 221 (W24), and CHEM 282 (F24). If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Sincerely,
