Petition Letter
I am writing this petition to request approval to take more than 6.0 units outside of Queen's University, to be able to study abroad in Europe during the winter semester of 2025. I believe that the opportunity to study abroad in a new country will allow me to immerse myself into new cultures, expand my education, and allow for personal growth and independence.
While studying abroad, I will be given the opportunity to not only learn in a new environment, but gain new knowledge and learn in ways that are unique to the institution and cannot be gained elsewhere. This unique opportunity will only continue to enhance my education at Queen’s, and allow me to take on new perspectives from new professors with different approaches in the field of psychology and linguistics. While studying abroad I plan on taking advantage of the unique academic opportunities in front of me. This includes attending seminars and guest lectures, getting to know my professors, participating in school events, and utilizing the cities and countries I am in to further my academics. These opportunities will help me develop a deeper understanding and have a well rounded knowledge of my fields.
I will have the opportunity to witness firsthand and fully immerse myself in a variety of distinct and unique cultures throughout my time in Europe, not just in the city where I will be living, but also in the several countries I will be able to visit. This will be a great opportunity for me to broaden my knowledge of the world and to keep developing my perspective on various communities. I will be able to gain a deeper understanding of how the people, customs, and history have influenced these diverse countries across the world by actively engaging in these communities through cultural events, simple day-to-day interactions, and taking advantage of the many historical sites.
Studying abroad will not only grow my academic, world and culture knowledge, but will also help me grow as an individual. This opportunity places me in a new country, where I do not know the people, the customs, or the environment, challenging myself to step out of my comfort zone and learn how to adjust. It will force me to be self-reliant, have independence and create a life for myself. It will teach me skills that I cannot learn in a classroom, such as budgeting, balancing academics and travel, responsibility and learning how to navigate life in a foreign country. I believe I will leave this experience as a more resourceful, open minded person, and have a deeper appreciation for our unique world.
