My name is Massimiliano Gennaro Mirabella Bodden, and I am writing this letter to formally appeal for
my dismissal from Queen's University. I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the opportunity to
explain the circumstances that led to my academic struggles and to humbly request a second chance to
continue my education at this esteemed institution.
I must begin by acknowledging my lack of understanding regarding the probationary measures and the
consequences that have led to my current academic standing. While I was not fully aware of the specific
details surrounding academic probation and dismissal, I am not surprised by the outcome, given my poor
academic performance. After receiving the dismissal letter, which I regretfully only read recently, I took
the initiative to thoroughly review the regulations provided by Queen's University, which clarified the
situation for me. It was only then that I went through my emails and realized that I had missed an earlier
communication from my academic advisor offering support. I deeply regret not seeing this email sooner
and not taking advantage of the help that was available to me. I fully acknowledge that this situation
could have been mitigated had I managed my time and responsibilities more effectively and proactively
sought the support that Queen's has to offer. I take full responsibility for these oversights.
Upon reflection, I realize that my challenges stem largely from poor time management and a lack of
diligence in monitoring my emails and academic responsibilities. I did not fully understand the
implications of being on academic probation, and I have only now read the email regarding the
seriousness of being put on probation.
During my first year, I struggled to adapt to the new academic environment, and regrettably, I did not
seek the necessary support. I was under the mistaken impression that my difficulties were primarily due
to administrative issues related to late payment, which resulted in complications with course enrollment.
Unfortunately, this misunderstanding led to significant delays in my academic progress, further
compounded by my inability to enroll in the courses required to maintain good academic standing.
Additionally, I had difficulty navigating the SOLUS portal and all its functionalities. However, I fully
understand that these factors do not excuse my poor performance, and I take full responsibility for my
dismissal. I now realize that I should have been more proactive in seeking guidance from academic
advisors and taking advantage of the resources available to me.
This experience has taught me invaluable lessons about the importance of time management, self-discipline, and utilizing the support systems provided by the university. I have come to understand that
academic success requires not only hard work but also the willingness to seek help when needed.
Moving forward, if granted another opportunity, I am committed to making substantial changes to
ensure my academic success. I plan to take full advantage of the tutoring services, the mentor program,
and the mental wellness resources offered at Queen's. Additionally, I will reassess my career pathway
with the assistance of the advisor at the peer Academic Support Services (PASS) to ensure it aligns with
my passions and goals. I am also committed to improving my time management by implementing
structured study blocks, dedicating specific times to assignments, study, research, and preparation for
exams well in advance.
I have now reached out to the advisors seeking their guidance and support on the options and paths
moving forward regarding my academic goals as I plan my return to studies at Queen's University. I
sincerely and humbly acknowledge not having responded to my advisor earlier email and for the delay in
addressing the issues that have led to my current academic situation.
