Petition Letter
Hi there, my name is Natasha Etigson and I am a fourth-year sociology major at Queens University. I am petitioning to add one class to my fall 2024 semester schedule as I could not meet the academic deadline on September 16th. Prior to the academic deadline, I had been checking Solus every day in search of an elective where I would repeatedly be met with full, closed, or extremely long wait-listed classes. When the academic deadline approached I was sure I would be able to finally enroll in a fifth class and selected GLPH 271 where I was placed on the wait list in second position. In this situation, I assumed I would make it off the waitlist and be enrolled into the class which I then realized was not the case. I immediately emailed the undergraduate program assistant Michelle Underhill who who has been extremely helpful throughout my studies at Queens. Over the past few months, Ms. Underhill has been assisting me with the academic decision of another class of mine. To elaborate, in my third year at Queens, I took the course SOCY 211 (statistics) which is required for sociology majors. I faced many academic challenges with this course as my learning disability prevented me from fully understanding the course content and now having to retake the course this year. I have been speaking with Ms. Underhill as well as the professor and teaching assistant of SOCY 211 for a while now about my grade. This situation has gone on for months and has been overwhelmingly stressful. We have not yet reached a solution therefore as of now, I must retake the course during the winter semester which makes a total of six courses. This heavy course load is not ideal, especially with my learning disability. The option to add another elective next semester would exceed my schedule to a heavy seven classes. I am eager to add a fifth class to my fall semester because of my hopes to graduate next fall. Additionally, I am in the process of applying to graduate programs and law schools. With this in mind, I hope you consider my request to add a course past the academic deadline. Thank you for taking the time to review my case and I look forward to hearing your decision.
