Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean, as an online undergraduate student at Queen’s University, I’m petitioning to take more than 6.0 units at another institution on a letter of permission. As I am exactly 12.0 units of electives short for my general Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language & Literature.
I recently applied for graduation for my general Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language & Literature for the expected graduation term for Summer 2024. As my academic progress on SOLUS displayed data that stated I had satisfied all of the requirements necessary for my Bachelor of Arts degree. Not only that, before applying for graduation I had also contacted the Academic Advising Team through email correspondence on December 18th, 2023. In order to double check and confirm that I had indeed satisfied all requirements for my degree and also confirm if I had completed all the requirements for my Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language & Literature as I understood.
Because at that specific time, on SOLUS the academic progress section stated that I had satisfied all requirements except for my option courses specifically category B that states that a total of 6.0 units must be completed from ENGL at the 200-level or above OR ENGL_Subs List. The Academic Advising Team responded to my email inquiry on December 19th, 2023, confirming to me that, once I had completed the final core course ENGL 273. I would have completed all of my degree requirements.
However, On October 15th, 2024, I was sent an email from Allison Gowanlock, the Academic Advisor and Assistant Degree Coordinator. Stating that after her completion of the degree audit on my student record as I had applied to graduate for Fall 2024. That I am, in actuality, short 12.0 units of electives and I am not eligible to graduate at this time. After this, I reevaluated my academic progress on SOLUS and it now displays data showing that I have not satisfied the minimum 90 units required. Regarding this matter, as I was not made aware of this in time. I was not able to enroll in any of the elective courses for either of the Fall 2024 and upcoming Winter 2025 term.
Upon receiving this email on October 15th, 2024, I sought to remedy this matter immediately and plan out how best to obtain the remaining 12.0 units of electives. Unfortunately, a large majority of the electives as of now for the Winter 2025 online term are either closed or simply cannot be taken due to missing prerequisites. Furthermore, due to Queen’s University Arts and Science online program having now officially closed, there is also a significant reduction in course offerings, specifically for elective courses. Which has further reduced the possibility to complete my degree through Queen’s university.
