Petition Letter
Dear Office of the Associate Dean of Arts & Science,
I am writing to formally request a review of the grade I received for my PSYC 100 quiz, which was assigned a mark of zero. I believe this outcome resulted from procedural errors and miscommunication regarding my accommodations, and I am requesting a reconsideration of this grade.
The grounds for my petition are as follows:
1. Procedural Discrepancies in Accommodation Implementation
My approved accommodations included the use of specific tools and methods during assessments, such as live proctoring and the use of scrap paper. However, the transition to a new platform eliminated live proctoring replaced it with automated monitoring, and prohibited the use of scrap paper. These changes were implemented without adequate notification or adjustment to my accommodations. This significant deviation from the agreed-upon terms unfairly led to my receiving a zero on the quiz, despite my extensive preparation.
2. Adverse Impact of Miscommunication and Lack of Support
During the quiz, I wore headphones under the assumption that live proctoring would occur, as per previous procedures. This assumption was based on my understanding of the terms communicated to me. Furthermore, the lack of clear guidance on prohibited materials, such as scrap paper, caused additional confusion. These miscommunications were beyond my control and unfairly penalized me for an honest misunderstanding.
3. Impact on Academic Performance and Integrity
Despite experiencing two syncope episodes, I prepared extensively for this quiz, demonstrating my commitment to academic diligence under challenging health conditions. I firmly believe that my performance was compromised not by a lack of effort or understanding but by procedural and structural issues beyond my control.
I respectfully request a thorough reassessment of this situation and a reconsideration of the grade assigned. To support my petition, I have included the following documentation:
A copy of my approved accommodation agreement, outlining the terms and expectations for assessments.
Evidence of my quiz preparation, including study notes and materials.
A description of the procedural changes and their impact on my performance.
I trust that the university's review procedures will ensure a fair and transparent evaluation of my petition. I am available to provide further clarification or additional documentation if needed.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Dunbar
