Petition Letter
During the fall semester of my fifth year, I took the class, PHIL 473, Further Topics into Philosophy of Logic with Adele Mercier. Before the school semester began, I had moved out of a shared house with three roommates into my own apartment in May. While I was adjusting to life on my own, I also held two jobs: part-time Sales Assistant at Urban Outfitters downtown and as the Graphics and Marketing Assistant Manager for the AMS Media Centre. Throughout the summer, I was able to maintain a balance and time management of my two jobs and my well-being. I am diagnosed with Major Depression and Generalized Anxiety for which I am prescribed 150 mg of Venlafaxine daily. Despite my mental illness, I purveyed the summer and into the school year. I took PHIL 373 as I had previously taken PHIL 250 with Professor Mercier in Fall 2024. Although I passed this class which has an enriching learning environment, I did not exceed in the higher-level class of Logic. My knowledge of Logic was that of a secondary level, whereas this class required more tertiary or higher. Despite the required knowledge, the topic of Logic deeply fascinated me as it influenced my metaphysical perspective on my personal life and well-being. My fascination was not enough to support my academic progress in the class despite my attendance and diligent notes as I struggled to exercises the homework. I became burnt out and exhausted trying to maintain two jobs, school, and my well-being while adjusting to living alone. Eventually, I was let go from my part-time sales assistant job at school as my well-being and my job at the AMS became more important to me. School took a back seat and my academic performance in this class suffered. The end of the summer to the end of the fall semester was a strenuous, difficult, and transitional period for my mental state, well-being, and life. During October and November, my superiors at the Media Centre placed me on a Performance Improvement Plan as my mental health began to affect my passion and productivity at work. I successfully passed as it inspired me to seek out therapy and begin to maintain a healthy structure of life. Since November, I was enrolled in weekly therapy sessions and recently switched to biweekly. I have maintained a healthy balance at school, work, and my personal life as I lacked that before now. Without the work I have done since November, I would not a healthy state today. I previously was enrolled in a dual honours program of English and Philosophy and deeply enjoyed the Philosophy of Logic. Despite being short credits to graduate in that program, I switched to a BA in English in January as I would like to graduate this June and would to remove this credit from my transcript. Although Logic is still something that continuously puzzles and intrigues me, my position at the Media Centre has sparked a passion in media production and community communications, where I intend to apply for a postgraduate certificate.
