Petition Letter
Subject: Urgent Petition for Reduction in Elective Credit Requirements
Dear [Recipient's Name] / To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to formally request a reduction in the elective credit requirements for my Bachelor of Science in Geology. My ongoing battle with severe health conditions has significantly impacted my academic performance, and I am deeply concerned about my ability to complete my degree within a reasonable timeframe. Without this adjustment, I fear that my health and future will continue to deteriorate, making it impossible for me to succeed.
I have severe ulcerative colitis, an autoimmune disorder that causes debilitating symptoms such as extreme blood loss, dehydration, overwhelming fatigue, intense joint pain, and a weakened immune system due to biologic treatments. My condition is unpredictable—medications that should stabilize me frequently fail, leaving me trapped in painful, extended flare-ups that make even basic daily activities a struggle. Eating is often difficult, leaving me drained and weak, and I am constantly at risk of severe complications. On top of this, I struggle with an eating disorder and a documented learning disability that affects my memory and comprehension, forcing me to spend significantly more time on coursework and exam preparation just to keep up.
Despite my unwavering dedication to my studies, these health challenges have made academic success feel nearly impossible. I push myself to stay on top of my coursework, yet the reality is that my body does not always allow me to do so. The physical toll of my illness is compounded by the emotional burden—I am constantly exhausted, stressed, and overwhelmed. The pressure of keeping up with a full course load, especially with demanding electives, has become unbearable.
Even after lightening my course load, I am still struggling significantly. My health has deteriorated to the point where I failed two out of three courses last semester, and if I fail another, it could place me on academic probation. This is not due to a lack of effort or motivation—I want nothing more than to succeed in my studies, and I have put most of my time in my studies. However, the additional burden of elective courses is making it nearly impossible for me to manage my condition while keeping up with school. Stress is a well-known trigger for ulcerative colitis flare-ups, and the vicious cycle of academic pressure worsening my health has left me in a constant state of struggle.
Beyond my education, this experience has stripped away my ability to enjoy life as a young adult. Instead of focusing on learning, building friendships, and growing as a person, I spend most of my time battling to stay alive, managing my symptoms, and staying in school. It is heartbreaking to watch my peers move forward while I am stuck in a seemingly endless cycle of pain and exhaustion while having to try to pass my courses.
I am not asking for an easy way out—I am simply asking for a fair chance to succeed despite my circumstances. Reducing my elective credit requirements would allow me to focus on my core geology courses without the added burden of unnecessary stressors that only worsen my condition. This adjustment is critical to my ability to graduate within the next two to three years and maintain what little stability I have left.
Please, I urge you to consider my request with compassion and understanding. This small adjustment would not only allow me to continue my education but also give me a chance to reclaim some control over my life.
Thank you for your time and support. I sincerely hope for your positive response.
Sincerely,
Athena Kondos
