Petition Letter
To whom it may concern,
I am requesting to waive the appeal deadline, due to financial and health problems that occurred around the time of the deadline. This caused me to be unable to pay for the fee required to make an appeal and to submit it on time. As for the appeal itself, I am aware that during the first portion of my studies a few personal problems had hindered my ability to work well academically and I was required to request an appeal. During the first appeal process (during late February) I was still working through many obstacles and being in and out of hospitals/treatment programs caused a strain on myself and my grades. Due to under diagnosis/ life threatening mental illness and not having a proper treatment program throughout the first and half way through the second portion of my first year, I was unable to focus on basic day to day life tasks, let alone invest my hard work and energy into my academics. Intense personal and emotional issues came about in April during the time of exams, this caused a strain on me, balancing between focusing on my goals to do well and to also just simply get out of bed. During the exam period I was under a lot of stress and was unable to cope with the stressors and anxiety that came along with sitting and writing exams. This test related anxiety caused me to be unable to focus and produce what I genuinely know on my exam, regardless of the amount of hours I put into studying and practicing for that particular exam(s). As May rolled around I began to see a drastic change in my overall well-being (emotionally and physically) due to a proper diagnosis and more intense psychotherapy, thus, making me able to deal with stressful problems and even stressed related to course work. I am continuing to better myself emotionally and physically throughout the summer with the help of various individuals at the LaSalle building on campus. Now I am aware of the countless resources on campus, that I was unaware existed when I needed them the most throughout the first year. I can now focus wholeheartedly on my academics and deal/cope with every day stresses. I genuinely hope that I am able to return to Queens in the fall and retake my first year with a brand new slate. I now have an improved mindset and I have been working extremely hard to better myself so my grades can reflect my intelligence, which I failed to show during the fall and winter term of last year.
Thank you for your time, Best Regards,
Kayla Bourdeau
