Petition Letter
Hello,
I was allowed to take my final exam for PSYC 370, even though I had taken the course in the fall and was kindly given the option to have it deferred. I have been ill since the end of March, seeing my family doctor once a week to beg him for antibiotics, which he said wouldn't help, as he believed the illness to be viral. Now the virus has spread to my sinuses for a week, which has been exhausting and draining, with fever, headaches and difficulty concentrating through the fog. As a single mom, my kids can assure you, I spent the Easter Break with them studying for the final until the last moment, when I realized I wouldn't feel better on the day. I emailed Dr. Monica Valsangkar-Smyth the night before to ask for her advice on whether I should take the exam ill, regardless. Her counsel was that I should petition the Faculty for a late drop in the course. I saw my doctor the day of the exam, yesterday, and he finally agreed to give me antibiotics for a sinus infection. I do not know what to do for my chronic sinus infections, as my doctor refuses to operate, I am at the mercy of every virus my children bring home and migrate to my sinuses.
I did very much want to write the exam, but I agree with the prof that perhaps it would not have been the best thing academically, as sick as I am.
