Petition Letter
I am petitioning to drop Biology 422 (winter 2024) and Chemistry 222 (winter 2024) and be
awarded Aegrotat standing in Biology 539 (winter 2024). The current marks on my transcript
are F, F, and D-.
I have had a mental health condition that has intermittently impacted my studies at Queens and
for which I have been given an accommodation and was diagnosed as depression.
Unfortunately, in February of 2024 this condition markedly deteriorated such that I was
struggling to complete work. By March 1 I was really unable to continue studies. I was unable
to concentrate, had suicidal ideation, could not think straight and struggled to maintain personal
care. I was referred to a psychiatrist by the mental health triage nurse and given a diagnosis of
both depression and ADHD and prescribed treatments for this. I returned home to Vancouver
and have been under the care of my family doctor, Dr Cindy Chang. The combination of
medications for these conditions has been helpful in improving my mental health. I feel I could
do much better in school now that I am on effective treatments. It is unfortunate this ADHD
diagnosis was not made earlier, as lack of treatment for it has adversely affected my
performance.
I did not drop the courses immediately as I was hoping I would feel well enough to complete the
work. Unfortunately, my return to feeling well has been gradual and I was not able to do this. I
did not complete this petition earlier as I was not aware of the possibility of doing this petition
until it was suggested as a possibility to me by a member of the student services staff at Arts
and Sciences few weeks ago when I called on another matter. This person told me the deadline
for this application was June 30, 2025. I could not find the appropriate form online, so contacted
them again last week for assistance. It now seems the deadline may be April 30, 2025, if so I
would like to petition to have an extension, due to confusion as to the deadline.
My intention was to complete a BSc Honors in Biology. I was registered in this program and
have completed all the Biology courses for this degree. Remaining are electives and 1.5
supporting courses. I am interested in the possibility of further study and have become very
interested in wildfire ecology. The marks from winter 2024 will adversely affect my ability to be
competitive for postgraduate programs. At the time I was both unable to do the work and
unable to figure out what to do about dropping the courses. I am hoping you will favorably
consider this request.
