Petition Letter
To whom it may concern,
My first year here at Queen's was unexpectedly difficult for me, leading to the decline in my gpa. The first few weeks were great. I was meeting new people, going to my new classes, and overall enjoying my university experience. After the first few weeks, everyone started to get settled in to their new lives and the academic demands started to increase. As assignment deadlines started approaching, I found myself starting to feel very anxious. Around the fall semester midterms the pressure really started to affect me. I was attending classes less than I used to, skipping meals, and not going outside as much. My anxiety kept getting worse as time went on, to the point where it was even hard for me to get out of bed sometimes. Constantly worrying about academics, personal insecurities, and the health of myself and my family were heavily contributing to my anxiety. With this my grades started to suffer, dropping quickly. As I have never experienced mental health challenges to this degree, I just kept telling myself that it was a phase and that it would pass by but it only ever got worse. Being away from home and not wanting to admit it to myself or my family, I did not reach out for support. I finished my first year thinking I scraped by and that this was just a fluke year. I thought I could return to my second year with a fresh mindset and mentality. Once I received my letter asking me to withdraw I knew something had to change. I am now working with my doctor and a therapist on a path to recovery with my mental health (Via medication, therapy, and academic counselling).
This petition that I am writing to you today is a testament to my commitment to improving my mental health and my participation in school. I am disappointed in myself, when I think about what I could have and should have done but unfortunately I cannot change the past. I can only improve for the future. I worked hard to get in this school and did not appreciate the opportunity I had been given. The last thing I want is to waste it and let myself down. As such, I am asking for a second chance to prove why I was admitted to this school and to achieve my long term goals.
