Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing to respectfully request permission to take more than 6.0 units of courses at another accredited Canadian university through a Letter of Permission. This request arises due to ongoing extenuating circumstances related to my mental health, which have directly impacted my ability to fully engage with on-campus learning at Queen’s in the upcoming academic year.
Over the past academic terms, I have been managing persistent psychological challenges that have increasingly made it difficult to live independently and maintain the routine required for optimal academic performance in Kingston. After consulting with healthcare professionals and reflecting with my support network, I have come to recognize that returning home for the year would offer the stability and emotional support I need in order to succeed academically. Being closer to family will allow me to continue my treatment while reducing the day-to-day stressors that have negatively affected my mental wellness.
While I am fully committed to completing my degree at Queen’s, I believe that temporarily continuing my studies from a location near home, with access to local resources and support, is the most appropriate course of action. I have identified equivalent courses offered at a nearby institution that align with my program requirements, and I intend to pursue them with the same academic rigour and dedication I have applied at Queen’s.
In addition to supporting my mental health, this arrangement presents an opportunity to engage with new academic environments and perspectives that will broaden my learning. I remain passionate about my studies and confident that this approach will allow me to maintain academic continuity and stay on track for timely completion of my degree.
I sincerely hope you will consider my petition to exceed the 6.0-unit threshold on compassionate and academic grounds. I am happy to provide supporting documentation from healthcare professionals if required and will ensure I follow all necessary steps to obtain a formal Letter of Permission before enrolling in any external courses.
Thank you very much for your time and understanding.
Sincerely,
Heidi Cui
