Petition Letter
To the Associate Dean,
I am Mason Lange, and I am petitioning to transfer more than the allotted 6 credits via the ILOP. In Summer 2024, I had the privilege to attend the NATO Field School administered by Simon Fraser University. This is a roughly seven-week course where we studied the operation of NATO in cities like Riga, Rome, and Brussels. We interacted with prominent national figures such as the Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs and high-ranking individuals in NATO, such as the (now) former Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg. The program also included two major simulations where we role-played NATO bodies such as the North Atlantic Council.
This course offers a unique opportunity to better understand how NATO functions. We visited many of NATO’s most important installations and grounds, including Joint Force Command (JFC) Brunssum, JFC Naples, and NATO Headquarters. Being able to meet the people who are truly involved in policy formation and diplomacy allowed me to truly understand the intricacies of International Relations. Unfortunately, Queen’s does not offer an equivalent program, so I jumped on the opportunity to do this through SFU.
I am submitting an Academic Petition retroactively because I was unaware that I was supposed to submit one before I took this course. Afterwards, I researched the steps required to transfer credits in this manner. I recently spoke to my academic advisor and the ILOP department to make sure I completed the process properly and in its entirety.
