Petition Letter – Add HIST 211 Past Deadline

Dear Members of the Academic Petitions Committee,
I am writing to respectfully request permission to add HIST 211 for the Fall term after the academic deadline has passed.
Extenuating Circumstances and Timing
Before the Fall add/drop deadline, I attempted to swap from ANAT 100 to HIST 211 multiple times through SOLUS. Each attempt was unsuccessful, returning the error message: “Unable to complete your request. You do not have access to perform this transaction at this time.” I was also unable to add myself to the HIST 211 waitlist, leaving me with no way to secure a spot despite repeated efforts.
Because I initially believed this was a temporary technical issue, I allowed some time for the problem to resolve. Once it became clear that the error was persisting, I acted quickly and began reaching out for assistance on September 17. To avoid missing ANAT 100 deadlines while troubleshooting the issue, I dropped the course at that time and immediately sought help.
Impact on Academic Progress
This technical issue prevented me from enrolling in a course that I need to complete my degree requirements. As a fifth-year Sociology student, I am wrapping up my final electives while also working full-time, carefully balancing my course load to ensure I complete my degree on time and graduate this spring. The delay caused by this enrollment issue has put additional pressure on that balance, and I am eager to resolve this as soon as possible so I can focus on my coursework and maintain my professional responsibilities.
Steps Taken
I acted promptly to resolve this issue once I realized it was not going to resolve on its own:
September 17: I contacted Michelle Underhill, Undergraduate Program Coordinator for Sociology, requesting assistance.
September 17: I contacted Danielle D’Souza, Registration and Systems Coordinator, who forwarded my email to Arts and Science Student Services and provided me with their contact information.
September 17: I emailed Arts and Science Student Services to explain the situation.
September 18: I received a reply from Lise Yeatman, Academic Resource Advisor, who advised me to seek instructor approval and submit an Academic Petition. I contacted Professor Leonid Trofimov, instructor for HIST 211, to request his support.
September 19: Professor Leonid Trofimov responded with his approval for me to join the course late (attached).
Commitment
I am a dedicated and hard-working student and completely understand that adding a course after the deadline is not ideal, even though this situation was outside of my control. I am fully prepared to catch up on any missed material and actively participate in the course for the remainder of the term.
