Petition Letter
To Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing to drop PSYC 397 (Summer 2015) and receive Credit Standing for PSYC 235 (Summer 2015).
I have been dealing with severe mental health related issues this summer while taking these two courses, which led to a failure (PSYC 397) and poor academic performance (PSYC 235). During the summer I was hospitalized twice because of two suicide attempts. Due to being hospitalized, I was unable to complete required components for each course, missing out on a group assignment in PSYC 397 and two quizzes and two group discussions in PSYC 235. Throughout the summer, I was also seeing a psychiatrist and was trying a new medication every week to try and find one that worked for me. This constant shake up to my system led to poor focus, lethargy, and stress, which in turn had a negative impact on my academic performance in my two courses. Unfortunately, my grandmother also died during the summer, and her celebration of life fell on the day before my two exams. I was unfortunately unable to go to this ceremony because I had my exams, and therefore my mind was still on her while taking my exams, which also led to a poor academic performance.
My plan for the future consists of continuing to meet regularly with my psychiatrist to ensure that I maintain a healthy mind and so that can achieve academic success. Thankfully, after much trial and error, I have finally found a medication that is working for me. I have contacted Health and Disability Services so that I have support within the Queen¿¿s community as well. To achieve academic success this year within my program (Honours Bachelor of Arts in Gender Studies), I intend to also just take courses that are required for my major. I am really interested in Gender Studies, and I find that is where I excel the most in, so that is where I plan to put all my energy towards this year.
Thank you for your consideration,
Alissa Partington
