Petition Letter
Dear Office,
My name is Hanyu Liu (Student Number: 20426991). I would like to respectfully apply for Withdrawal for MATH 121B and ARTH 122 in the Winter 2025 term. Despite my best efforts to continue my studies, my performance in the aforementioned coursework was greatly derailed by an unpredictable and tragic family/medical situation that took place during that time.
1. The Early Decline of My Father’s Health and the Psychological Effect (January 2025)
I tried to continue my studies upon resuming school in January of Winter term 2025. Nevertheless, I was increasingly experiencing anxiety and emotional instabilities. My father has always struggled with his diabetic condition, yet beginning from late 2024 to Winter term 2025, his condition began deteriorating in an amazingly short time. My family has been regularly informing me of my father’s sudden weight loss and blood glucose level extremes that resulted in numerous visits to the hospital.
I noticed myself waking up in the middle of the night to suddenly check my cellphone to think about just how long his body can survive with complications. Because of the level of fear and anxiety that I experienced constantly, I chose to seek assistance via Queen’s University Student Wellness Services. On January 27th, I was revealed to have severe anxiety. The counselor believed because I was not in my residence, being miles and miles away from my father to physically take care of him in the manner in which I would prefer to, my level of anxiety was intensified. However, I recognized that it not only symbolized the start of experiencing plummeting emotional and mental events for months, but it weakened my capability to execute good performance on my academics.
2. Sudden Aggravation of Condition in Father Again (February 2025)
In February, my father’s diabetes progressed to life-threatening complications very swiftly. My father was regularly admitted to the hospital due to an erratic heartbeat, pain in the kidneys, and infection. The doctors were suggesting the possibility of organ failure and warning my family members that my father’s condition might change very rapidly. Meanwhile, I was attending classes, observing slides, and reading study materials, but was not able to focus my mind on it for even a couple of minutes because my full attention was on whether my father would live to see the next morning.
Each phone call made by my mother was accompanied by tremors in her voice. The topics being discussed were emergency services, fever, and organ failure. I remember being in my study with open pages in front of me while my hands were violently shaking. I was dreading opening my messages because game-changing information was always trickling in there. At the end of February, I understood that my father was in immediate danger.
3. Into China and Continuous Hospital Attendance (March to September 2025)
I was supposed to fly back to China on March 3 to be with my father in this crucial stage in his life as well. When I went back to China, I spent my entire time in the hospital. The beeps of machines to keep someone alive in the ICU, the rush of people in the corridors in the hospital, and the crying of family members in the ICU rooms became my reality. I brought my laptop with me wherever I went. I tried to finish all my assignment work in the waiting areas in the hospitals. Sometimes, I was perplexed because I was stuck on one paragraph with my mind, and I couldn't understand what was in the paragraph in front of my eyes.
On March 9th, I went to a nearby hospital for a psychological analysis. The results revealed that I was severely anxious and showed signs of, for instance, loss of appetite, problems with sleeping, repeated thinking, and muscle contraction. The doctor asked me to take action instantly. I was feeling hopeless because not only was I watching my father suffer, but I was even afraid of losing control of my thinking processes.
I wanted to be strong. Nevertheless, watching the nurses working with infusion machines and hearing the warning noises coming from them made it impossible for me to control my emotions.
4. Receiving a Critical Condition Notice
On the 2nd of April, there was a Critical Condition Notice issued. The notice indicated that his condition was in critical state because of malign arrhythmia, acute failure of the heart, severe infection, injury to the kidneys, and multiple organ dysfunction. The physicians warned us that he might die at any time. I experienced numbness in my hands the moment I saw that critical condition notice. I lost sleep for a couple of nights because I couldn't stop thinking that my heart was racing.
The number of writing tasks in ARTH 122 has likewise increased. The situation with writing tasks was such that I attempted to sit by my father’s bedside to write. Nonetheless, after seconds, I would find myself drifting elsewhere. I experienced numerous emotional breakdowns with every attempt to embark on writing my essays. I was not able to build on an argument or understand writing in academia. Hours went by with my blank gaze on the computer screen. The D Grade that I received is not reflective of my capability but rather the point in time where my life went awry. My father’s status since 2025 concerning my deteriorating health with bipolar illness has not been in good condition because I attended the ARTH 122 class poorly. The ARTH122 class has no final examination since it consists completely of assignments from January to April in each year. Therefore, it was not possible for me to apply for an extension in that subject.
5. Psychological Breakdown and Second Clinical Diagnosis (April)
There were nine days before I experienced my second evaluation concerning my psychology on the 11th of April. The doctor evaluated me and determined that I was severely anxious and depressed. He recommended that I follow a regime of continuing care lasting for a total of six months. He noted difficulties in my concentration and in my temporary memory functions. At that time, I was struggling with emotional and stress reactions. Then, I was experiencing episodes where I would erupt in sobbing outbursts of tears.
At this stage, I couldn't continue to function in my studies on a normal level. My assignments were not organized properly, and I was missing key information. I was frustrated watching my father deteriorate while my schoolwork was getting worse.
6. Apply defer for three courses in 2025 Winter
In classes where there are final exams, I requested direct deferments. In my firm belief, it is the most recommended academic option that I can currently exercise. The final exams for ECON 112 and SOCY 122B are rescheduled for September. The final exams for MATH 121B are rescheduled for October. Despite my being in a fluctuating state concerning my mental health, deferments will help allow me to improve somewhat. I completely prepared for my final exams in April and September.
7. Temporary Stabilization and Return to Canada (September 2025)
I went back to Canada on September 7. I made it a point to go back to my regular life. I reviewed my lecture power point slides and assignments. For the first time in the last couple of months. I pored over to prepare for my deferred exam in ECON 112 and SOCY 122, and I successfully completed both exams with a C grade average in September. Then I pored over to prepare for my deferred exam in Math 121B scheduled on October 4. I knew I was ready to demonstrate my capability.
8. Sudden Death and Collapse During MATH121B Exam (October 4, 2025)
On October 4, Just a few minutes before entering that MATH 121 examination room, I got a call that my father had died even after emergency care had been given to him. I was shocked to the core. I was not able to say even one word. My legs seemed to turn to ice. I was about to enter the examination room in a state of shock. I couldn't even read my questions properly. The words were blocked out. I couldn't even make straight lines with my shaking hands. There were tears trickling down my face.
Despite the extensive preparation work I had done, grief wiped out everything from my mind. The F I scored is not reflective of what I know.
9. Withdrawal (drop course after ddl) Request
The coming weeks were characterized by emotional shutting down on my parts. I experienced problems in handling complex information and administrative assignments. Besides, I experienced difficulties with memory loss and tiredness. I was not avoidant of my tasks but was only incapable of executing them. When my state of mind was enhanced through therapy, I acquired my ability to evaluate my transcript and discovered that two grades were associated adversely with my trauma episode: ARTH 122 and MATH 121B.
10. The Reason for Withdrawal in Only Two Courses
I am only requesting the late withdraw for ARTH122 and MATH121B. The critical periods for ARTH122 large assignments were perfectly timed with my father’s break-down and my psychological meltdown. The deferred exam for Math121B occurred on the day of his death. ECON112 and SOCY122 have not met this level. The exams were deferred during a stage of temporary emotional stability, and the grades represent completion on a partial level. I am not attempting to simply drop the classes. I am attempting to retroactively change my academic record for classes that were influenced by extreme documented circumstance.
11. Efforts toward Recovery and Future Commitment
Regarding my situation since total 2025 this year, I continue to stay in therapy and counseling. I continue to work on restoring my patterns of sleep and study habits. Education has always been one of the biggest values my father has instilled in my life. Pursuing further education in a good and healthy environment is, in effect, paying tribute to my father. I shall continue my college education in an honest manner.
12. Conclusion
ARTH122 and MATH121B are not reflective of my academic skills. I would kindly like to request a late withdrawal because I would prefer to see learning rather than losses on my transcript.
