Petition Letter
I am writing to respectfully petition to have ARIN 100 dropped from my academic record due to extenuating circumstances beyond my control that significantly affected my academic performance during the term.
From November 2 to November 14, I had a physical illness that significantly impaired my ability to function academically. During this time, my concentration, energy, and ability to engage with coursework were significantly reduced. As a result, I was required to submit an extenuating circumstances form for my Calculus exam, and because of this, I was unable to submit the personal reflection assignment for ARIN 100.
At the beginning of October, my mental health started to decline, giving me feelings of isolation, mental fog, and emptiness. I took steps to manage these challenges throughout the semester; however, my academic functioning had already been impacted significantly. Facing these issues made it difficult for me to engage effectively with the course. Due to these ongoing issues, I was unable to regularly complete coursework. Although I made efforts to manage my responsibilities, I was not functioning at my usual academic ability. By early December, I had made improvements in managing my challenges and began to regain stability on my own.
While these challenges led to the decline of my academic performance overall, this course was particularly impacted. During this period, I prioritized my mandatory and recommended courses, focusing my limited abilities on courses more directly tied to my program requirements. As a result, I was unable to maintain the academic expectations of ARIN 100, including attendance and required written work. This is why I am petitioning this course specifically.
I did not drop ARIN 100 by the drop deadline because, at the time, I believed I would be able to achieve a high, if not passing grade, once my health improved. However, my physical illness and mental health challenges made it much more difficult to complete the required work for the course.
In December, my focus shifted to preparing for final exams. Due to the impact of my challenges earlier in the term, I was required to independently learn a significant portion of the course material across my courses to have a realistic chance at passing my exams. During this time, I realized that the Dropbox for the final assignment in ARIN 100 had already closed. I immediately contacted the professor to ask whether submission was possible, and was informed that even with full marks, I would not be able to achieve a passing grade.
Given that these circumstances were beyond my control and had a direct and significant impact on my academic performance in ARIN 100, I am respectfully requesting that this course be dropped.
Moving forward, my circumstances are now being managed more effectively. I plan to continue prioritizing my health, maintaining appropriate academic supports, and approaching future coursework with a more balanced and sustainable workload.
Thank you for your consideration
