Petition Letter
Good afternoon,
I am writing to request a credit standing (CR) in my statistics course, a mandatory requirement for my program at Queen’s University.
During the fall semester, I experienced significant mental health challenges, resulting in my consulting a therapist. While I had previously been able to effectively manage academic stress, the onset and escalation of my symptoms around mid-October directly affected my academic performance. These symptoms included persistent difficulty concentrating, disrupted sleep, and extreme fatigue. Although the symptoms are not the focus of this petition, the impact on my academic performance was substantial. Tasks that normally are manageable like attending lectures, completing readings, and learning new material, became increasingly difficult over October into November. It is important to note that my academic performance did not decline due to a lack of motivation, but because my mental health significantly impacted my capacity to learn any new material, let alone perform daily tasks.
The impact was most evident in Statistics (D), which altered my GPA to a great extent. During the midterm season where I used an academic consideration for a key component in the course, midterm 1, which accounted for 34% of my grade. Additionally, I was not able to submit Lab 2 on time, resulting in a 10% deduction. Both of these outcomes were directly linked to symptoms worsening increasingly between October and December. Throughout this period, I took steps to address this by consulting a therapist in an effort to reach a diagnosis and develop effective strategies; however, the term concluded before I was able to regain effective functioning. These challenges were genuine and had a direct and ongoing effect on my performance and well-being. The final grade of D does not accurately reflect my capabilities, and since the fall semester, I am actively taking measures to continue my studies at Queen’s University this winter semester, and I am confident that I can meet the academic expectations of my program.
I am requesting a CR standing as this grade could be detrimental to my goal of applying to graduate programs in Speech-Language Pathology, and I am committed to continuing my studies despite my current circumstances. With a lack of documentation for the month of October specifically, I would also be willing to meet to further discuss my situation if needed.
