Petition Letter
Dear Members of the Faculty of Arts and Science Academic Petiton and Appeal Committee,
I am writing to respectfully submit an academic petition regarding my academic standing in a second-year Computer Science course during my first semester at Queen’s University. I sincerely appreciate your time and consideration in reviewing my request.
During the semester, I experienced significant extenuating circumstances that severely affected my mental health and academic performance. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer during this period, which caused considerable emotional distress and led to severe anxiety episodes and a worsening of depressive symptoms. In addition, personal relationship challenges further compounded my mental health difficulties.
As a result of these circumstances, I was unable to physically attend classes for more than two months. During this time, I returned home while the academic term was still in progress, which can be substantiated through travel records such as bus tickets. I also made efforts to communicate my situation by informing clubs, and other university contacts, although my condition often limited my ability to follow up consistently.
I sought professional support by consulting healthcare providers both through Queen’s University services and third-party healthcare professionals. I can provide documentation showing appointment bookings, as well as a medical letter related to my mother’s breast cancer diagnosis. Additionally, I have supporting testimonials from my roommates and rental property owner confirming my absence from Kingston and the circumstances surrounding it.
Because of these challenges, I was unable to complete certain quizzes and adequately prepare for the final examination, which ultimately resulted in not passing the course. I respectfully ask for your understanding and consideration in reassessing my academic record for this course, particularly regarding missed assessments and my inability to write the final exam under these conditions. Although I was able to write my final exams, I was not fully stabilized at that time.
In additions, due to the severity of my mental health struggles, I was unable to complete the Academic Consideration request process in a timely manner. When I later contacted Academic Consideration, I was informed that retroactive action could not be taken because my request was submitted after the deadline. Regrettably, the same extenuating circumstances that affected my academic performance also hindered my ability to navigate the procedural requirements at the time.
I take full responsibility for my academic obligations and deeply regret the outcome of this semester. I am committed to my studies and have since taken steps to stabilize my health and ensure that I am better prepared to meet academic expectations going forward. I am hopeful that, given the documented and extraordinary nature of these circumstances during my first semester, my situation may be reconsidered with compassion and fairness.
Thank you very much for your time, understanding, and consideration. Please let me know if any additional information or documentation would be helpful in reviewing my petition.
Sincerely,
Rafael Andre Pamintuan
