Petition Letter
I am writing to formally petition for a retroactive drop of all courses from the previous academic term due to extenuating circumstances beyond my control, which directly affected my ability to engage in my studies and resulted in my academic outcome for that term.
I was initially admitted to the university in 2020, and throughout my studies I developed an understanding—based on information I had heard during my earlier years—that if courses were selected but tuition was not paid, the registration would eventually be cancelled and the courses would be automatically dropped. I now recognize that this was an incorrect understanding of the university’s administrative procedures, and I acknowledge that this misunderstanding contributed to my current situation.
In addition to this administrative misunderstanding, I experienced significant immigration-related circumstances during the term in question. My study permit expired on July 31, 2025. Prior to its expiration, I submitted a renewal application in a timely manner. However, due to unusually prolonged processing times this year, my renewed study permit was not approved until October 30, 2025. During this entire period, I was aware that I was not legally permitted to study in Canada without a valid study permit, and therefore understood that I could not lawfully participate in my courses.
Based on my understanding at the time that all of my registered courses would be automatically dropped due to non-payment of tuition, I believed that I was no longer enrolled. Consequently, I did not log into the university’s systems to check my enrollment status and did not access OnQ, attend classes, or participate in any course-related activities during the term.
As a result of both my expired study permit and my misunderstanding of the administrative process, I was completely academically disengaged throughout the term. I did not attend any classes, submit assignments, or participate in assessments for any of the registered courses.
In January the first few days, when I began preparing to return to the university and register for courses for the Winter 2026 term, I discovered that I was still listed as enrolled in the previous term’s courses. From that point onward, I immediately began contacting various university offices by email to clarify and resolve my enrollment status. At the time I initiated these communications, final grades had not yet been assigned. However, while I was awaiting responses from the relevant offices, grades were gradually released and officially recorded.
I respectfully request that the committee consider these extenuating circumstances and approve a retroactive drop of all courses from the previous term. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
