Petition Letter
I am writing to request consideration for a late academic petition to convert select grades from the Fall 2024 and Winter 2025 terms to credit standing due to extenuating circumstances that significantly impacted my academic performance.
At the time these circumstances occurred, I was not aware that a petition process was available. Due to the severity of my mental health challenges during this period, my primary focus was on managing day-to-day functioning. I was often mentally and physically exhausted, which limited my ability to seek out or engage with academic administrative processes.
Additionally, I was largely isolated during this time and was not in regular communication with peers or others who might have informed me of available academic resources or options. As a result, I did not become aware of the petition process within the applicable timeframe.
During the Fall 2024 term, I experienced significant mental health challenges related to previously unresolved childhood trauma that resurfaced unexpectedly. This had a substantial impact on my ability to focus, attend classes consistently, and complete coursework to my usual standard. I was receiving support through Student Wellness Services during this time, and documentation is provided to corroborate this.
In December 2024, my therapist left Student Wellness Services. I had established a strong therapeutic relationship that was particularly important in the context of the cultural factors underlying my experiences. Prior to this, I had encountered difficulty finding appropriate support, and this transition was destabilizing. At that point, I did not have the capacity to reinitiate therapy and revisit these issues with a new provider. As a result, although my symptoms persisted, I was not actively in treatment during the January to April 2025 period.
These circumstances continued to affect my academic performance into the Winter 2025 term. While I made efforts to remain engaged in my coursework, my functioning was significantly impaired compared to my usual capacity.
I have since re-engaged with mental health support to address the ongoing and at times debilitating effects of these challenges, including persistent anxiety and difficulty with emotional regulation, which have continued beyond the original period in question. I am actively working to manage these symptoms and improve my overall well-being.
The impact of these challenges was not uniform across all courses. I am therefore requesting credit standing specifically for courses where my academic performance was most affected, while retaining letter grades in courses where I was better able to meet expectations.
Specifically, I am requesting that the following courses be converted to credit standing:
● BIOL 300 (Fall 2024)
● MICR 386 (Fall 2024)
● BIOL 341 (Winter 2025)
● PHGY 216 (Winter 2025)
I will retain letter grades for my remaining courses during these terms, as I believe they more accurately reflect my academic performance where I was able to meet expectations.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I have attached supporting documentation from Student Wellness Services and am willing to provide any additional information if required.
Sincerely,
Aditi Ingale
