Petition Letter
I am writing to respectfully petition for approval to add classes for the upcoming summer semester after missing the add/drop deadline due to extenuating medical circumstances beyond my control. Beginning in mid-February, I was diagnosed with mononucleosis, which subsequently led to serious complications involving my kidney and spleen. From mid-February through to recently, I was in and out of hospital and under close medical supervision, including regular bloodwork and ongoing care from my family doctor. The severity and unpredictability of my condition made it impossible for me to make an informed decision about taking on an academic workload this summer. Because my health remained uncertain throughout the add/drop period, I was unable to responsibly commit to course registration before the deadline passed. The direct effect of this illness on my academic planning has been significant. The prolonged and unpredictable nature of my recovery meant that I could not assess whether I would be physically capable of completing coursework, attending classes, or meeting academic requirements. Committing to summer courses while my condition was unstable would have risked further disruption to my academic record. As a result, I made the difficult decision to wait until my health stabilized before pursuing registration, by which point the deadline had passed. I am pleased to report that my health has recently turned a corner. I have been cleared from hospital care and, following continued monitoring by my medical team, I am now well enough to resume normal activities and take on an academic workload with confidence. I am prepared to provide supporting medical documentation confirming my diagnosis, the duration of my illness, and my current recovery status if required. I want to be transparent about the steps I have taken throughout this process. I have maintained regular contact with my academic advisor and have received approval from my undergraduate chair, both of whom are aware of my circumstances and supportive of this petition. Adding these classes is also directly tied to my graduation timeline. I am on track to complete my degree at the end of the summer semester, and these remaining elective courses are essential to meeting that goal.
