Petition Letter
I am reaching out to petition for a secondary scheduling of my deferred exams in classes POLS350 and POLS383.
Unfortunately, on the initially scheduled days of the exams during the winter exam period, I was experiencing flare ups in the symptoms of my disability, which left me unable to write the exams on their initially scheduled days. At this point, I emailed my instructors, requesting to write these exams during the winter deferred exam period. Unfortunately, on May 18th, the evening prior to my first deferred exam on May 19th, I suffered a concussion after falling down the outdoor stairs of my home and hitting the back of my head, as well as my tailbone, on concrete steps.
From the evening of the 18th of May, to the morning of the 22nd of May, I was experiencing significant concussion symptoms, which I was able to recognize as I have already experienced several concussions throughout my life. I was experiencing light sensitivity and was unable to be in a lit room and unable to look at screens or devices. I was simultaneously experiencing significant amounts of nausea, and a severe headache, which worsened with movement. I was unable to sit or stand for extended periods of time, and spent the majority of this time laying down.
On the morning of the 22nd of May, I went to the walk-in clinic to be examined and ensure I was not in need of any further medical attention. This was the first point at which I felt able to attend the clinic, wait in line, and sit upright waiting to be seen. I attended the clinic and was diagnosed with a concussion.
Due to the concussion which I suffered on the 18th of May, and the aforementioned severe symptoms which followed for 4 days following the initial injury, I was unable to get myself to the exam centre, unable to sit and wait for my exam timeslot, and ultimately, did not feel as though I would be able to sit for the duration of the exam, nor use the mental faculties required to be successful in the scheduled deferred exams on the 19th of May and the 20th of May. Moreover, I was unable to file a petition regarding this prior to the exams taking place, as I was unable to use screens or sit in a room with light for extended periods of time due to the pain which it caused, as I explained in my petition to extend the petition deadline.
My professors have been extremely understanding and accommodating throughout this semester and prior, as I have suffered from many flare ups in my disabilities this semester. I have also faced illness, as well as an extremely difficult personal circumstance which led to my having to file for academic consideration throughout the last few months of the winter semester. They have been extremely gracious in accommodating these circumstances in various ways, and I am frustrated and disappointed that I am having to request yet another accommodation due to this concussion. Simultaneously, I am deeply sorry to the faculty who I have inconvenienced due to my disability symptoms and extenuating circumstances, and who I am now inconveniencing with this injury and my need for a further deferral of these exams. I would like to express that I deeply appreciate all of the efforts from those involved to assist me with these circumstances, including this concussion which I am currently experiencing.
Thank you very much for your time in reading and considering this petition, and for any assistance or consideration you may be able to provide with the rescheduling of my deferred exams. I completely understand if it is not possible to do so. Nonetheless, I appreciate the time and efforts of all involved in reviewing this petition.
I am able to provide further documentation if at all necessary, and am available to discuss if needed.
Thank you very much,
