Petition Letter
Dear Academic Petition Committee,
I am writing to respectfully request a late course drop for the selected courses I had failed during the Summer 2025 and Winter 2026 academic periods. At the time in question, I was experiencing significant and debilitating mental health challenges that substantially affected my ability to meet my academic responsibilities. These challenges were beyond my control and directly contributed to my poor academic performance in these courses.
Throughout this period, I was struggling with severe and undiagnosed mental health difficulties that ultimately resulted in a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Prior to receiving appropriate medical attention and support, I experienced severe anxiety, depressive symptoms, difficulty regulating emotions, impaired concentration, and significant disruptions to my daily functions. Meanwhile, the impact on my studies and academic performance was substantial. I struggled to focus during lectures and while completing coursework, often finding myself unable to retain information or sustain concentration for extended periods of time. Tasks that normally would be manageable became overwhelming. As a result, my attendance suffered and my assignments were submitted late or not at all.
At the time, I did not fully understand the severity of the mental health challenges I was experiencing. Consequently, I was not immediately equipped to seek the level of support I needed. However, since then I have taken significant steps to address these challenges and improve my overall wellbeing. I have engaged with healthcare providers, followed treatment plans, and developed healthier coping strategies for managing emotional distress and academic pressures. I recognize the the importance of academic standards and do not make this request lightly. However, I respectfully submit that the failed courses do not accurately reflect my academic abilities or my commitment to my studies. Rather, they reflect a period during which mental health challenges impaired my ability to perform academically.
For these reasons, I respectfully request a late withdrawal from DEVS 220 & LAW 205 (Summer 2025) and from HIST 253 (Winter 2026). Thank you for taking the time to consider my petition and supporting documentation. I appreciate the committee's consideration of my request and the opportunity to explain the circumstances surrounding my academic record.
Sincerely,
Angelina Martin
