Petition Letter
Dear Queen's University School of Arts and Science team,
I am petitioning to allow for an LOP for a second degree student to complete 2 courses to wrap up a BA Linguistics degree at the University of Toronto.
As a proud 2023 Queen's alum with a Bachelor of Computing in Cognitive Science, I am now currently pursuing a second degree in Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics student with just 2 courses left to graduate. My time at Queen's gave my incredible opportunities, experiences, and memories; from leading the computing student government, bringing a group of tech-business students to pitch competitions in Toronto, going on exchange in Germany, representing Queen's at an international competitions, attending a tech conference in Japan as a student volunteer, etc. I graduated absolutely invigorated to change the world, and realizing my passion for language and culture, and the power of humanities at the intersection of technology, especially now given the rise of AI. So I decided to pursue a second degree in linguistics after my first. Unfortunately in 2024, I had to take a step back from my studies to support my family, leaving me now in no financial or able position to move back to Kingston to finish my degree.
With just 2 courses from completing my degree, I am missing LING320 (phonology) and LING330 (morphology). Both of which are offered at the University of Toronto, accessible from where I live, while LING330 is not even offered next year according to the SOLUS.
Thank you for your consideration, I am happy to discuss and provide any further information at flora.lin@queensu.ca.
