Petition Letter
Throughout the 2025–26 academic year, I experienced persistent mental health challenges that significantly affected my academic functioning. Although I had experienced some difficulties previously, these challenges became substantially more impactful throughout the last academic year and progressively affected my ability to manage university demands. They impaired my ability to initiate and complete tasks, adhere to deadlines, prepare for assessments, maintain communication with instructors, and consistently engage with my coursework despite my best efforts.
As my symptoms persisted throughout the year, I found myself falling behind academically and becoming increasingly overwhelmed. This affected my ability to complete coursework, prepare for examinations, complete deferred assessments, and respond consistently to academic communications. The effect of these circumstances cumulatively impacted multiple courses and resulted in incomplete course requirements before their respective deadlines.
Recognizing my struggle, I actively sought support through campus and other resources. During the affected period, I registered with QSAS and implemented academic accommodations, engaged in ongoing therapy through Student Wellness Services, and worked with an occupational therapist. While these supports have been invaluable, I was still in the early stages of understanding my difficulties and learning how to effectively use the accommodations and strategies available to me.
Because these challenges first emerged during my time at university, much of the past academic year was spent learning to recognize how they affected my academic functioning. I have since come to understand that receiving accommodations is only one part of the process, and learning when and how to effectively use them requires time, reflection, and continued support. As I have continued treatment and developed a better understanding of my needs, I have become significantly better equipped to manage my academic responsibilities and advocate for myself.
The courses included in this petition were directly affected by these circumstances. My difficulties impaired my ability to complete outstanding coursework and assessments and successfully navigate deferred academic requirements as well. Although I remained committed to my studies and actively sought support throughout the year, the cumulative impact of my health circumstances substantially affected my academic performance.
Since then, I have continued to engage with the supports available to me and remain committed to improving my academic standing. I am actively pursuing the appropriate academic processes to resolve these academic outcomes where possible and intend to continue my studies with the benefit of the support systems and strategies I have now developed.
I respectfully request that the Faculty consider the substantial impact these extenuating circumstances had on my academic performance when reviewing my petition.
