Petition Letter
July 31, 2026
To whom it may concern,
My name is Elizabeth Boye and I am writing to petition to please receive a late course drop for IDIS 199. With this formal request, I understand that a (DR) indication will remain on my transcript permanently.
This academic year, I got ill several times. My grades did not reflect my typical diligent work and it has affected my mental health, stressing over solutions. I am a Chancellor's Scholar and take my academics very seriously. Unfortunately, my scholarship- which I truly need for financial purposes, became at risk after several low grades. I selected some courses to take over the summer so that I can increase my GPA. Further unfortunate, was the matter that I was under the impression that I needed to increase my academic year GPA, when in reality it was my cumulative GPA, and not as large of a jump was needed. Nevertheless, I knew it was important to excel in the courses I had selected to demonstrate academic excellence. On June 23rd, my younger brother was diagnosed with the flu. The doctor at the clinic he had gone to with my parents noted that it was likely my siblings and I had caught it too. We were advised to monitor our symptoms but rest at home since they were aware it would be the same respiratory illness.
Sure enough, I began experiencing similar symptoms and became bed ridden for an extended amount of time. I visited an online doctor to assess my symptoms and provide me with a doctor's note so that I may receive academic consideration for the time being. At this point, I had already missed a significant amount of coursework. The severity of which I experienced the flu meant that I had to completely take a step back from my academic work. The date of which the medical team planned for me to recover by, (July 10th) soon arrived and I logged back online to re-engage but found that I was unable to bounce back the way I hoped. It became difficult to follow the modules and complete upcoming assessments, and just when I hoped I could at least accept the late marks (which I knew were significant), and submit within the week's timeframe, I began experiencing respiratory illness-like symptoms again. I work at a summer camp with 180 small children attending each day, so these symptoms are not uncommon, but I feel another round of academic consideration would not be helpful at this point. The exam is coming up, but it is looking unlikely that I will pass this course. I am pleading for a late drop so that this term, I may see some respite and work towards stronger grades in the fall term.
I thank you for your compassion in the opportunity to submit this petition, and would like to inform you that I am open to answering any further questions or providing further documentation to submit this request in good faith.
Many thanks,
Elizabeth Boye
