Petition Letter
I am currently a 4th year Math & Film Medial. At the end of my 2nd year I decided to switch my degree from a Life Sci Major, Film Minor. As a result, I had numerous core MATH courses to catch up on - one of those being MATH 111.
In 3rd year I was able to complete the MATH 111A equivalent online at Athabasca University, however the course went under revision by Athabasca before I could complete MATH 111B.
Not knowing this would happen, I planned out my schedule for this semester with MATH 384 to satisfy my last 300+ Math requirement.
Upon finding out that I would not be able to complete MATH 111B, the Math Undergraduate Chair, Greg Smith, has suggested I take MATH 211 and MATH 212 instead.
Enrolling in MATH 211 made me drop MATH 384 due to time conflicts, so I needed to find another 300+ Math credit. After discussing with Prof. Greg Smith and Prof. Peter Taylor, an exception was made to allow me to enrol into MATH 382 (of which MATH 211 is a prerequisite) this occurred Sept 21, 2015. However, after being in MATH 382 for one week, and having discussed with Prof. Taylor, it is clear that taking MATH 382 concurrently with its pre-req. MATH 211 is too ambitious.
In these discussions, the option of enrolling back in to MATH 384 arose. I have talked with Prof. Ping Li and she has agreed that MATH 384 would be feasible (I have the required pre-reqs) despite the time conflict with MATH 211 since it is a self-learning course; that is, students are expected to read and learn the material during non-lecture hours.
I believe this to be the best course of action that balances my current knowledge, self-teaching ability, Math/Film course conflicts, and necessity for the credit to complete my degree requirements.
