Petition Letter
I am appealing to drop ANAT 315 after the academic deadline. The sequence of events that caused me to miss the academic penalty deadline are outlined here.
On Tuesday, November 3rd I wrote my second ANAT 315 midterm. With the knowledge of the academic penalty deadline approaching, I immediately emailed my professor, Dr. Easteal and asked when marks would be released. He said that he would release the first set of midterm marks on Thursday, November 5th, and the marks for the second midterm would be released after the drop deadline. The first midterm marks were not released until Friday November 6th.
Feeling apprehensive about my performance on the midterms, I consulted academic advice from Anna van der Meulen, the undergraduate coordinator for Kinesiology on November 4th. Although it was difficult to make a decision without knowing my marks, we decided that dropping ANAT 315, was a good option given my situation.
I waited until Friday November 6th, to drop the course, as my final decision would be influenced by this first midterm mark. After receiving a surprisingly high mark on the midterm, I needed more time to make my decision. I work in the evenings, and made the decision to drop the course after my shift.
After finishing work at 11:15pm I attempted to drop the course. At this time I was unexpectedly blocked from dropping the course, due to it being a co-requisite for KNPE 254, another course I am taking this semester. The following day I consulted Anna again, and described the situation. She informed me that she had forgotten that I would have needed her override to drop the course.
These are the sequence of events that caused me to miss the academic penalty deadline.
Ultimately this was out of my control since I would have needed to faculty to release the co-requisite block in order to drop ANAT 315, and this was not discussed in my academic advising appointment. Additionally, the only feedback from ANAT 315 was distributed the day of the drop deadline. Knowing these marks earlier would have pushed this timeline back.
Additionally, given the circumstances, I would also like to appeal the 50 cost associated with this procedure. I was prepared to drop the course before the deadline and sought academic advising to avoid any conflicts. The School of Kinesiology was in the position to waive the co-requisite, but the system override was overlooked.
