Petition Letter
Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing to drop PSYCH 100 in the Fall 2015 semester.
The reason I am making this request is because of the terminal illness and subsequent death of my mother. She was diagnosed with cancer in July 2015. I enrolled in the course nonetheless, expecting to be able to handle the course load along with my typical work and personal responsibilities. Unfortunately, as time progressed, her condition deteriorated very rapidly. I was able to take a few weeks off from work to spend time with her in September and October as she underwent treatment. Eventually, she was admitted to a palliative care ward. She passed away early in the morning on October 26, 2015 at age 48. From late September until her death, I was unable to keep up with the course content, as I was trying to spend as much time as possible with her because we were very close. When I did attempt to complete the required course work, I found myself unable to focus and consolidate my knowledge as I normally would, due to the circumstances. It was my first experience with the death of an immediate relative. I did not feel the need to seek professional help or counselling, as I am lucky to have a solid support system consisting of family and friends.
I intend to continue my studies at Queen¿¿s through the CDS department starting in the New Year, of course keeping in mind the course I choose will have to be a half year course rather than a full year. I do not expect, and hope not to have to deal with difficult circumstances as I detailed above, and suspect I would not be writing this letter if my mother had not become ill and passed away.
