Petition Letter
To The Associate Dean,
I am writing this appeal in order to drop my ECON 222 course after the deadline. The reason I did not drop the course before the deadline was because I was waiting for my midterm mark to determine if I should proceed with the process. Unfortunately, I failed my midterm.
This course is vital to my major (Economics), and I feel that it is very important not just to pass the course, but excel in it, because it is the foundation of my Economics degree and, without a strong base of knowledge, the upcoming years will be a struggle.
In previous years, my academics have always been my strong suit. However, during the end of this summer, my girlfriend of two years and I broke up. This was particularly hard on me because we shared everything and even lived together. Throughout all this misery and pain of the breakup, I have found it hard to focus on my studies as a whole this semester; I missed many of my lectures due to the lack of motivation I felt and my grades represent this. In addition, the process of finding a place to stay was hectic since university was starting soon and I ended up having to live alone. Living alone did not help with my situation and communicating with my parents was my only source of comfort; I called them daily since they live in Egypt and I can¿¿t see them until the Christmas break.
Thanks to my parents and friends¿¿ persistent encouragement, I have had some time to recover and I believe I can still catch up with my other four courses, but for the fundamental ECON 222 course, just passing will not suffice. Also, dropping ECON 222 will allow me more time to study for my other subjects thus allowing me to do better on them as a whole. Furthermore, I really wish to take on the amazing experience of going on exchange in my third year, however, if my GPA does not meet a certain threshold, I will be denied this privilege.
Economics is my passion, and not only do I wish to succeed in it, but also to excel in my field of study because I¿¿m strong-willed and goal-oriented. This experience has taught me to be more mindful of the drop dates and to make an honest self-evaluation of my progress before the deadlines. Also, in the future, I will make sure I utilize the supportive facilities that Queen¿¿s University provides like the Wellness Centre if I ever feel like I need support.
Best regards,
George Fahim
