Petition Letter
To whom it may concern,
This appeal requests to waive the 21-day appeal deadline in order to drop two courses that were taken during the winter term of 2014 and one online course taken during the summer of 2014. The specific courses in question are HIST 122B, PHIL 203, and SOCY 122 (online). Prior to March 2014 I had been an eager and dedicated student at Queen's University both achieving high grades and enjoying the diverse community found there. However around the beginning of March 2014 I began to face serious and overwhelming issues related to depression and mental health. As the issue progressed it became apparent to my family back home that it was best for me to return home to Mississauga, Ontario where I had a support system to aid me. Though this ended up begin the correct decision I unfortunately was forced to defer two of my exams (HIST 122B/ PHIL 203) until after the summer when the fall semester began.
Moving into the summer I was determined to continue my studies in order to keep my mind sharp and hence signed up for an online sociology course (SOCY 122). Unfortunately over the next few months my condition worsened and eventually culminated on an attempt on my own life in June. Following this event I spent several months working with a number of doctors at the local hospital in an attempt to change things around. I was not considered fully recovered until March of 2015 (though I am now eager to return to my studies with renewed vigor). During these events the SOCY course I was taking online fell to the wayside (I did not write the exam) and I failed to contact my professors in order to write my exams for the winter term ( HIST 122B/ PHIL 203). I recognize that these are failures to live up to academic expectations on my part but I seek to appeal the final grades due to the fact that extenuating circumstances prevented me from fulfilling my responsibilities. Because of these circumstances I was unable to appeal the grades within the deadline and these grades now mar my transcript in both the eyes of future employers and graduate schools. I ask now if it is possible to waive to deadline so I might drop these courses and retake them, allowing them to more accurately represent my academic merit.
