Petition Letter
Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard,
My name is Natasha Leung and I am a psychology major and linguistic minor. I am appealing to the facult of arts and science to add a course late (LING 205). Last Friday, I attempted to change my courses in order to work towards completing my linguistics minor plan. As the deadline fast approached, I quickly added linguistics 205 into my course schedule. However, only after the deadline had passed, I noticed that a different course had been added instead of LING 205. It appears as though a wait listed course that I had forgotten was still in my shopping cart had been added in its place. Linguistics 205 currently has space and fits in my course schedule, as well as helps fulfils the course requirements in completing my linguistics minor degree plan.
I believe this error arose for a few reasons:
Firstly, I have been under a lot of stress recently with completing applications (such as the bilateral exchange program), changing houses, and preparing for the Engineers Without Borders National Conference that I attended this past weekend. This culmination of stress and anxiety caused me to have difficulty deciding which course to take in order to best advance my degree.
Secondly, I did not bring my laptop with me to this conference. Instead, used a friend's laptop which was set up differently from mine and the hotel Internet was overloaded and, thus, slower than normal. This made it difficult to see and correct that fact that I had been entered in the wrong class before the deadline passed.
However, I am still not sure how the wait listed course ended up being added. I remember clicking on LING 205 to enrol on schedule. After I noticed that HLTH237 had been added, I tried again to add LING 205 but the deadline had passed and subsequently, I was unable to correct the mistake.
Furthermore, I have been dealing with a great amount of anxiety re-emerging since this issue arose. Since being diagnosed with anxiety several years ago, I am also grateful for the support and assistance the university has been very helpful in providing. Resolving this issue would greatly help in reducing the symptoms I am currently experiencing and allow me to put my full focus on course work and extra curriculars.
Lastly, I have emailed the professor who is instructing linguistics 205, Dr. Lorena Jessop, for her approval to aid in this process. I hope that you, too, will grant me permission to add a course late so I may complete my linguistics minor plan within the four year time line.
Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing back from you.
Sincerely,
Natasha Leung
