Academic Preparation
1. Did you have difficulty with the course content
In and of itself, I did not have difficulty with the course content. I attended lectures, availed of Learning Strategies workshops and other exam preparation resources, consulted peers, professors, and teaching assistants when I had questions. During the exam period, I did not feel an unhealthy amount of physical stress.
Should I be allowed to return to my studies, it is my priority to immediately re-take CHEM 281, MICR 221, and PHGY 214.
2. Do you think your choice of academic programs is the problem
In and of itself, the course content of the Life Sciences academic program is not the problem, but rather the form of testing. It is inevitable that in a large academic program, multiple choice exams will be used because of ease of marking. However, after availing of various resources, it will be necessary for me to seek professional help in determining precisely why writing multiple choice exams is such a psychological challenge.
3. Have you acquired the learning strategies that will allow you to be an effective student
I have used resources on and off campus to acquire the learning strategies that will allow me to be an effective student, as mentioned above.
Motivation
1. Was the material sufficiently interesting, so that working on your academic subjects was generally rewarding Did you make sufficient effort at your academics relative to your nonacademic activities Or did you tend to miss classes, avoid your readings and fail to complete your coursework
The material in all of my courses was more than sufficiently interesting ¿¿ I enjoyed attending lectures and absorbing the wealth of information that my professors had to offer. Effort-wise, I dedicated non-lecture hours each day to thoroughly reviewing the lecture notes that I wrote, completing any given readings, and completing any given assignments punctually. I was on the executive for a club, but having executive duties actually helped me to focus more on academics because I had to organize my time well in order to complete my course work. If I did miss a lecture, I made sure to either watch the recorded lecture or obtain the notes from a peer in a timely fashion.
Personal and Financial Resources
1. Do you have the physical and mental health needed to be a successful student Do you have the life skills needed to cope with everyday interpersonal and practical demands
I have an extremely supportive group of family and friends on and off campus that fully encourage my academic endeavours. Off campus, my mother at home maintains frequent contact to make sure that I am doing well. On campus, I have a close group of friends, particularly within the Newman House Catholic Chaplaincy, and excellent mentors in Father Raymond J. de Souza and Scott Sanderson.
I realize, however, that my psychological challenge with writing multiple choice requires professional help. Therefore, on top of the measures I have already attempted, I fully intend to consult with Health, Counseling and Disability Services to determine precisely why my psychological exam writing difficulties are continuing despite the measures I have taken.
Situational Demands
1. Were you subject to extraordinary situational demands that prevented you from succeeding
I was not subject to any extraordinary situational demands beyond the psychological challenge of writing multiple choice exams which continues to make academic success difficult due to the testing nature of my academic program.
