Petition Letter
Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard,
I am writing this letter because I am appealing to drop CLST 201: Roman History (Winter 2016). Due to unfortunate mental health issues I have been unable to preform in this class.
At the end of October last year I noticed my mood changing drastically, things I enjoyed seemed pointless and keeping up with schoolwork became extremely difficult. Eventually this got better but at the end February I noticed it starting to come back. I was able to get an appointment with Dr. Zlatko Banic and he diagnosed me with what he categorized a ¿¿quite extreme case of depression¿. This depression caused me to do poorly on assignments, not be able to focus in class, and made it impossible to retain any information from studying when I was able to get some done.
Dr. Banic suggested that I go to my professors and get extensions on my assignments and ask for extra help, which I did and I have been able to catch up in all of my classes except CLST 201. Due to the depression I fell so far behind in the class that it is not possible for me to catch up and pass the class. This is extremely saddening because I find Roman History very interesting and really enjoyed the class. I ended up having to go home for family matters as well as to help my mood and just get back to the person I was but while I was home my midterm was moved to a few days before its original date without my knowledge. The professor was sympathetic but unfortunately he was unable to help me and said that I should appeal to drop the coarse and take it next year since I am so interested in the material.
Like I have stated above, I have been seeing Dr. Banic for help and he has been very supportive of my condition. I had originally planned to take 3 courses this summer but I will only be taking one due to his suggestion of taking a lighter course load until I have a grasp on my depression. I will also be taking a lighter course load in the fall to help me not fall behind like I did this semester. This will include retaking CLST 201 since I have every intention on retaking and completing the coarse when I am healthy and am able to give my full attention to my studies.
Since I will be coming back in the fall I am planning on meeting with Dr. Banic throughout the summer or another Doctor that he suggests. This will allow me to continue to meet with them throughout the fall and winter semesters instead of changing Doctors after the summer. I have also consulted with Kathryn Morrissey from the Arts and Science Academic Services. Kathryn has been extremely helpful throughout my struggles and has explained the process of appealing very well. In the future I will seek help from her with my academics.
I appreciate you taking the time to consider my decision of appealing to drop CLST 201 and I hope that you also agree with my choice to do so.
Thank you,
Ty Whitelock
