Petition Letter
Dear Dean of Studies,
I am submitting this to appeal the decision taken by the Faculty asking me to withdraw for a period of three years. For obvious reasons this would be a disastrous turn of events and do serious harm to my life and academic career. I experienced some significant difficulties here at the University in the 2012/13 academic year. I am appreciative of the opportunity granted to me by the Faculty to return to school and chance programs. My initial entry into a pure science program proved to not be a good one. I re-committed myself to my studies this past year and my grades are showing the benefits. My annual GPA was approximately 1.9 compared to approximately .7 last year. I very much enjoyed the Arts courses I took this past year and If eel as though I have made a great decision to change disciplines.
I had two extenuating circumstances in this last academic year that had an impact on my abilities as a student. In late October of 2013, I was injured whereby my nose was broken and needed surgery (photos have been attached). I was breaking up a violent conflict and was inadvertently struck by an assailant causing me the physical harm. I required several visits to the hospital to have my nose set and re-set. This was extremely painful and occurred at a time when I was completing assignments and preparing for exams. Despite the trauma to my face, I performed reasonably well in my fall term exams.
The second issue I dealt with this year was being diagnosed with mononucleosis. This occurred early in the second semester and persisted for much of January. I did not feel myself until well after the winter break. For financial reasons I am required to work part time for income to supplement my student loan. Studying, working part-time and playing varsity football seemed to take its toll on my physical health and ability. That said, I was much improved compared to the previous year.
This past year I met regularly with the Athletic Student Services Coordinator as a pre-condition to my being permitted to continue this past year. I am on the right track and have a solid plan in place that will help me get to where I need to be. I plan to become a teacher in the future and have researched the requirements and pathway necessary for success. I am hoping that the improvement I have shown and the bizarre circumstance I faced this past year will provide the committee with a reason to allow me to continue. I believe I am more than capable of achieving my goals here at Queen¿¿s.
Yours Sincerely,
Stewart Anoya (ID 10028047)
