Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean of Studies,
I am appealing to have the 21-day appeal deadline waived in order to apply for credit standing in the following courses; HIST 122B (Winter 2014), POLS 110B (Winter 2014), SOCY 122B (Winter 2014), ENGL 223 (Fall 2014), FILM 240 (Fall 2014), GNDS 120 (Fall 2014), GNDS 280 (Winter 2015), IDIS 302 (Winter 2015) and to appeal to drop these courses; INTS 306 (Fall 2014), GNDS 215 (Winter 2015), SOCY 235 (Winter 2015) past the deadline.
I have been dealing with severe anxiety and depression following the diagnosis of my Grand-Fathers terminal cancer in January 2014. Since then I have spiralled downward into a dark depression. It was not until I began having suicidal thoughts during December 2015 that I began to seek help. First through the Queen¿¿s counselling services and from there I was introduced to a psycho-therapist in Kingston named Marlo Gillis. I truly believed that with Marlo¿¿s help along with the anti-depressants I had been prescribed that I would be able to get back on track and succeed at Queens. I also met with academic advisor Spring Forsberg as a step to help me get back on track. After meeting and discussing my situation with Spring, I filed an appeal to drop classes past the deadline for the fall 2015 semester and I was also advised to submit a secondary appeal to drop courses from the 2014 fall semester and 2015 winter semesters. However, unfortunately I was unable to follow through with the path that I had set forward for myself, which included submitting this secondary appeal, attending all classes and completing my schoolwork. The stress of school along with other worries continued to compound and my depression worsened. After not speaking with my parents for over two weeks, my mum drove up to Kingston from Toronto to check on my well-being. It was during this time that I along with the support of my parents and therapist made the decision that it would be best to take time away from university in order to focus on my mental health and to get myself in the right frame of mind to where I would be able to succeed at school and also in life. Upon making this decision, I began meeting with academic advisors Joyce Hunter and Kathryn Morrissey to discuss my academic options and path. It was during this time that I was introduced to the process of credit standing along with dropping courses past the deadline. For the first time in a long time I felt that there was hope for me to get myself out of the situation I had put myself in and with the support of my mum, I was able to begin my appeal process.
After coming home, I met with my doctor to begin my recovery process, he has since referred me to a psychiatrist at Mount Sinai Hospital, who I am meeting with soon. He has also suggested that I continue my further education closer to home, where the support of my family is nearby. However, I sincerely hope and trust that after receiving more intensive treatment over the summer and perhaps throughout the 2016 fall semester that I will be able to return to Queen¿¿s and complete my undergraduate degree as I will have the support of my parents and therapist in Kingston and believe that this will ensure my success in completing my degree at Queens.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Regards,
Ruth Young
