Faculty of Arts and Science
Appeal Committee
Dear Sir/Madam,
My name is Sharon Waldman and I am a first year student in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Coming to the end of my first semester as exam period was beginning in December 2015, I was stroke by severe abdominal pain accompanied by high fever and various other symptoms. After being hospitalized on December 9th I was put on bed rest for almost a month. This prevented me from writing my first term exams. My hope was to use the winter break while on bedrest to recover so I would be able to write my exams on the assigned deferred dates. However, instead of getting better I got worse. In the weeks that followed I visited several hospitals, was seen by different specialists and ultimately was admitted to Mount Sinai Hospital for almost 3 weeks. By this point I had missed the deferred dates for my first term exams, as well as almost a month of classes for my second semester. As I received a diagnosis that would require quite a few months to recover, I was forced to drop all my second semester classes and lost my first semester full-year credits. In an attempt not to lose everything I had worked for, I agreed to write the exams for my two half-year courses in April when exams rolled around for second semester. I hoped I would be better by then. I had started treatment and was feeling better, getting ready to write the exams, but then I had a horrible relapse at the beginning of April. The pain, the exhaustion, the nausea and all the many other symptoms I had managed to overcome came back tenth fold. My doctors are optimistic and have expressed that in time, we will find the right treatment that will allow me to manage my symptoms. I am fully expecting to be back at school in September. This request for appeal is in regards to the exams for my two half-year courses I was unable to write due to my relapse. Therefore, I kindly request your support as I require to drop the course Bio102 and write my Spanish100 during the summer. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Sharon Waldman
