Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing this letter to appeal for permission to drop the courses CHEM 223 which were held in the winter semester respectively. The reason for my appeal comes my mental health issues. I have been suffering from depression and anxiety for several years now and these mental issues have become more pronounced since entering post-secondary education. This is due to the stress from the workload academically as well as the idea of adulthood beginning to emerge in the process. During this academic year, I found that both my mental disorders had extensively affected my work and study habits. On days when I was depressed, there was a lot of difficulty getting out of bed as I did not see the point in starting the day at all. Feelings of inferiority would come to me as I would always believe that I was an idiot compared to all my friends despite them telling me this wasn¿¿t so. As well due to this inferiority, I also was discouraged from going to class as I strongly believed that even if I went, I would not be able to understand the material at all. My anxiety mainly affected my ability to go to class and keep up with my academics. During class, the speed the teachers went was sometimes too fast for me. Sometimes this was so overwhelming that I preferred to stay at home. This lead to me falling behind much more in classes. As I fell behind this increased my anxiety as I realized more work was piling. However instead of having a will to complete all the work I had instead went back to my depressive phase and believed that I was this stressed because I was unable to handle the university lifestyle. In the end, break downs and meltdowns became so frequent that I didn¿¿t want or be able to work at all. The feelings of not being able to hold my life together; possibly not having control over my future was so overwhelming that sometimes I was unproductive for the whole day. Due to these reasons, I went to see a counselor and the academic advisor, Cindy Butts. They both suggested that I appeal to drop the courses as doing so would hopefully help me focus on working on my depression and anxiety. In the meantime, I plan to change my academic plan by going for the general Bachelor of Science instead of the honors one in addition to dropping out of Concurrent education. My counselor¿¿s name is Anja and has provided a support document that will be send over by the counselling services and I am also happy to answer any questions regarding my appeal. Thank you for taking the time to review this request.
