Petition Letter
Dear, Dr. J. Hugh Horton
I am appealing to drop PHIL 157 (Winter, 2014) and PSYCH 100 (Full Year 2013-2014)
The extenuating circumstances I have endured during this year which has affected my studies is my health. I have two conditions with my stomach which hinder my ability to achieve my academic goal. I suffer from esophagitis and Cyclic vomiting. Both of these conditions have made it difficult to study, attend lectures and focus on tests as well as assignments. When suffering an attack, I have little to no control of when/if I stop vomiting. These attacks come and go, which makes it difficult to plan for the work I need to complete for my classes. I have been suffering from this since August of 2012, with a surge in intensity from January to April of 2014. I have been switching from medication to medication as well as being on a specific diet with no avail. During this last semester, I dealt with multiple attacks which made it hard to work. I was able to complete both of my Geography courses because that is the field which I have excessive interest in and wish to Major in. I was unable to pass my other two courses due to poor time management with my illness, planning when to study for which class while being ill. As well, I have come to realize that I do not have the same interest in Psychology that I had when entering the course in first year, attempting to retake the course was not a wise decision.
If my appeal is successful, I plan on retaking Philosophy 127 in the fall of 2014. However, I do not plan on retaking Psychology 100 because I feel the course is not a good fit for me and the direction I wish to take my studies. I plan on focusing on geography and languages such as German. In order to be able to be able to work however, I am going to have to take a different approach than the multiple medications I am on now. I will be meeting with the Canadian Naturopathic College of Canada over the summer. I was supposed to meet with them last summer, but the person who I was seeing went on tour for his book release. Their plan is to focus my rehabilitation through an even more specific diet and exercise, which I would be continuing when I return to Queen¿¿s. In the future I will need to change my study habits to accommodate for the conditions I have. I will do this by changing when/how I study. I will also need to meet with my Teachers Assistants more often to ensure I am on top of my work, because at any time I can become incapacitated. This will ensure that I have a successful year.
Thank you for your understanding.
