Petition Letter
I am writing to appeal for a credit standing in my second term classes with the exception of CISC 102. Unfortunately during second term I suffered from a fairly severe concussion. Not long after I experienced a seizure like event caused by the intense concussion symptoms along with the accompanied stress and anxiety. I ended up being taken from my rez room by ambulance to the hospital where I stayed most of the night. Unfortunately these symptoms just didn't go away over night and my grades suffered which only added more stress onto me. Having all my grades back now I find myself with not only a GPA below the 1.9 threshold required to get into the software design plan, but also low enough to be put onto academic probation. After speaking with one of my professors I was made aware that I can submit an academic appeal to have a credit standing put on the courses I took second term so that they would not effect my GPA. If this went through, I would have a GPA above the¿required 1.9 and would be able to get into the SODE plan.
The added stress and anxiety was also a large factor in my grades. Having missed midterms and assignments due to my concussion, my exams were suddenly weighed a lot heavier than they should have been and were therefore much more of a worry. I tried by best to overcome this by joining the bounce back program, speaking to outreach counsellors and seeing tutors from ASUS peer tutoring a couple times a week. Even with all the extra work I was putting in, my symptoms still held me back. The more I tried to focus and work the more my head would hurt, so I still was not able to work to my full ability.
This effected me in all of my classes in second term, however I would like to keep my grade in CISC 102 as is. I still did much lower than I should have in the course (I was doing very well in it up until my concussion), however I unfortunately failed the course first term and therefore need my newer mark for that course to make up for the old one. For all of my other second term courses (including calculus and economics which are full year courses) I¿¿d like to appeal them for credit standing.
