Petition Letter
My name is Alyssa Gravelle; I¿¿m currently a Fourth year Sociology student. I am applying for the faculties decision about waiving the 21-day appeal deadline and dropping the two courses: FREN P11 (Fall 2012) and SOCY 275 (Fall 2012).
The reason why my appeal is well over the 21-day appeal deadline is because back in October 2012, I incurred a traumatic incident that affected my emotional and physical capacity. In October 2012, I was getting out a physical and verbal abusive relationship. On October 29th 2012, I filed a police report with the City of Kingston against my former partner. I was unable to give my full attention to my courses since I did not feel safe and secure living in Kingston or even going to class with the opposite sex. During this traumatic time my anxiety levels were not manageable and I experienced severe panic attacks and depression while pondering possible altercations with this individual. I tried my best to be successful in all my enrolled courses, however it was extremely difficult due to the circumstance, my grades were extremely poor, resulting in failing two out of my three courses. In the Winter 2013 semester, I lowered my course schedule, which allowed me to achieve better success. I recognize that my existing condition at the time impeded my full attention to this course.
As time has gone by, I now feel more comfortable talking about my past situation and have obtained professional help, which has allowed me to feel safe to be in class with male students. I have a supportive family and friends who support me and provide me with faith that tomorrow will be a good day. To this day, it is still difficult for myself to tell individuals my story since I do not feel comfortable. It took me awhile to gain the courage and confidence to seek the medical help that I needed.
