Petition Letter

To whom it may concern,
I am appealing to wave the twenty-one day deadline due to extenuating circumstances. The deadline was set for me to appeal to a ¿Return to Academics After Three Years¿¿. The following letter will describe in detail why I was unable to make this deadline.
First, I recently was prescribed a new medication to treat my recent diagnosis of ADHD. This medication did not have the desired affect of making me focus and I reacted poorly, making me lose track of several important dates. I have since had this corrected.
Secondly, during the period in which the twenty-one days fell, my girlfriend was undergoing treatment for a tumour found during a routine medical procedure. It was not known at the time if the tumour was malignant and as such was a pressing issue in which she required my emotional and mental support. Furthermore, she has also been previously diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder (which she has been receiving treatment for). This made my support much more urgent. Of course, news of alignment also weighed heavily on me, and prevented me from prioritizing other personal requirements.
Lastly, in early May, I received the unfortunate news that a friend I had made in the military (also a student at RMC) had very unexpectedly committed suicide. This devastating news ¿¿ combined with my failed treatments and girlfriends illness ¿¿ became overwhelming. As the beginning of June approached, the wellness of my girlfriend was still unknown, my friend¿¿s suicide was severely affecting me, and my treatments were only starting to be corrected. It is at this time that I would like to refer to my student file, which has documented another recent diagnosis of major depression from early April; thus the circumstances that I was experiencing were greatly intensified.
I would also like to add the minor issue of my work commitments. As mentioned earlier, I¿¿m an infantry officer in the military. I require this work as I am financially responsible for myself. Due to a prior contract, I was doing fieldwork during the last week of the appeal. I understand that work commitments should not be prioritized over academics, but I was in a place without Internet access managing over 50 soldiers and working approximately 20 hours per day. However, now that my treatments have been corrected, I intend to return to Queen¿¿s, putting my academics as my only priority. When this first appeal is accepted, I will provide a more detailed Academic Plan regarding this matter.
Missing such important deadlines is quite unlike me and when to my horror I realized I had missed the deadline I was deeply embarrassed. Such a mistake will never again occur on my part. Unequivocally I have no greater desire in the world than to complete my degree at Queen¿¿s and I will not allow any circumstance to come before this again. I will not let Queen¿¿s down.
