Petition Letter
Dean of Associate Studies,
My name is Sarah Seguin. I am a fourth year Arts student here at Queen¿¿s University. In May I was informed that I would be forced to withdraw for study for the next upcoming academic school year due to my low grade point average. Unfortunately the e-mail was buried in my inbox. In result, I am submitting this appeal late ¿¿ but, as soon as I possibly could.
I would like to take the time to explain myself and explain the cause for my poor performances. As you probably know (due to passed appeals) I suffered from a severe concussion - which restricted me from attending class completely for the remainder of the 2013-2014 academic year. Then post concussion symptoms affected my life negatively for a while afterwards. I was not able to get out of bed due to depression, and did not have motivation to do anything I was once passionate about. In result, my psychiatrist decided it would be best to put me on antidepressants. I tried many different types of anti-depressants from January 2014 ¿¿ January 2016. I realized in January of 2016 that this medication was nothing but a band-aid and was not actually fixing anything but actually making things worse. During the last school year I was seen by many doctors and psychiatrists on campus, for follow-ups after I was weaned off the medication.
Now that I have been off of anti-depressants for the entire summer months ¿¿ I am now able to get out of bed, function and go to work each and everyday.
I want to admit that this unfortunate event definitely threw my life plans off track ¿¿ considering I haven¿¿t accomplished all that much during my time at Queen¿¿s. However, I now have a different aspect on life now ¿¿ and a much different way to accomplish my goals. I realized that there is no point in rushing through my recovery, and taking on more than I can handle. But, instead accomplish a little at a time, master that ¿¿ and then move on to the next step.
That being said my wishes are to continue as a part-time student at Queen¿¿s to ensure success. I don¿¿t see completing my undergrad as a main priority at this time. My main priority is to learn, grow, and succeed no matter how long it may take.
My plans for the upcoming years are to pursue a degree in Applied Economics with a minor in Mathematics. I truly enjoy these subjects and would like for you to reconsider your decision of my academic withdrawal for the year to come.
Any supporting documentation you may need should be in my file ¿¿ that accompanied my previous appeal. If you need any questions answered at all please e-mail me at sseguin@studentworks.com
Thank you for your time,
Sarah Seguin
