Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean,
This submission is to provide sufficient evidence that after three years withdrawn from studies that I am prepared to complete my degree. Reflecting on my time at Queen's University is an exercise that brings me both joy and disappointment. The institution afforded me with the opportunity to participate in a unique community of individuals with virtuous goals that were genuinely attainable. For five years I teetered on the fence of realizing my potential. Ultimately, I did not seek the help that I required to follow through in completing my degree.
Addressing the core reasons for failing to complete my degree program has been a focus of mine over the past three years. During my time at Queen's I would periodically find myself struggling with anxiety and depression. There were three areas in my life at that time that I can now identify as areas that caused my mental health concerns; personal relationships, academic demands and financial needs. Some of my mental health challenges have been documented at Queen's as part of a previous appeal as well as with Queen's University counselors. A part time job throughout university added a layer of time management that I was not prepared for. As a student, I rarely found the content of the classes to be too difficult. The issue academically was showing up to the exam or submitting final assignments. I would study thoroughly and complete my assignments but would feel a wall of anxiety that prevented me from completing courses. Only within the past three years have I opened up to my support network about these realities.
Steadily, I have improved on the aspects of my life that have caused me difficulty in the past. I am currently employed with a healthcare management firm as a proposal writer. I began with this company as an intake coordinating, coordinating medical assessments. Within a year I was promoted to join the business development team. My current position is a fast paced and deadline oriented position that requires discipline and time management. My success in this role has provided me with the confidence to believe that I can be successful in completing my degree. Opening up to my support network, which includes my incredibly supportive family and friends, has added a layer of comfort and security that I did not have while attending university.
Thank you for taking the time to review my appeal to return to studies. I am confident that I have taken the necessary steps to be successful in a return to studies. While taking responsibility for my past, I am excited for the opportunity to move my life forward to a future that I can be proud of.
