Hello Associate Dean of Studies,
I am appealing to request waiving the 21-day or one-term deadline for writing the PHAR 270 final exam.
The PHAR 270 exam was to be written on April 18th, 2016, however, due to personal and extenuating circumstances, I requested a deferral from Professor Mulder. The request for the deferral was because of my cousin's wedding that took place in Hong Kong from April 15th-April 21st. I emailed Professor Mulder explaining the situation, and she allowed for the deferral and advised me to write it either in the summer or early fall. With this information, I organized to write the exam on October 13th, 2016, which was fine with Professor Mulder. Had I known that there was an appeal process, let alone an allotted time frame for deferred exams, I would have either completed the appeal form in the given time frame, or written the exam on an earlier date. Rather than lack of responsibility, respect, and understanding of the deferral process and the Associate Dean of Studies, it was simply a lack of knowledge that there was a process above requesting a deferral from the Professor. The following contains the conversation between myself and Professor Mulder:
Hello Professor Mulder,
I am emailing you to ask what steps I need to take, and if possible to write my final exam before April 15th, as my cousin's wedding is taking place on the 17th in Hong Kong. It would be much appreciated if you could send me in the right directions to do so, or if you may help me yourself.

Hi Alexander,
I am happy to arrange an alternate exam time with you, however, our policy is that the make-up exam has to occur after the original exam time. Only in very special circumstances do we allow students to write an exam before the rest of the class does, for exam confidentiality reasons.
Is it possible for you to write the exam in Kingston when you return from Hong Kong, either in the spring/summer term or when fall courses resume If it is not possible, let me know, and I can make a request to the department to see if they will allow you to write the exam early.

That is great news
I am going to be working full time as of May 1st , so it will be very difficult for me to come back to Kingston to write the exam post trip to Hong Kong, however, if it is the only possibility to make this situation work, I will of course try to find a way. With this being said, the best would be for when fall courses resume, if I cannot write the exam before the 15th. Thank you so much for your efforts.

Hi Alexander,
Ok, we will give you an Incomplete grade until Fall 2016. You can write your PHAR270 exam at the beginning of the fall semester. It will be your responsibility to contact me in the fall to set up a day and time for your make-up exam.

Dr. Racz is available to administer your PHAR270 exam from 9am-noon on October 13th. I have copied him on this email. Dr. Racz will let you know where to meet him on the morning of the exam.

Moving forward, I will try my absolute best to avoid asking for deferrals, however, if circumstances require for them, I will complete the assignments in the allotted time frame, or complete the appeal process in a timely manner. I can promise that this situation will never happen again, now that I understand the process and have adequate knowledge of how to deal with the situation at hand. When observing my grade before the PHAR270 exam, it is clear that I care deeply about my academic success, and would never do anything to jeopardize my ability to succeed here at Queen's.
