Petition Letter
To the Associate Dean of Studies,
I am appealing to drop CISC 320 (Fall, 2016).
On Wednesday, November 2, 2016, my father died after a six month battle with brain cancer. He was diagnosed in April and as a result of his illness, I reduced my course load at the beginning of this term (Fall 2016) down to three courses. Until now, it was difficult for me to concentrate on and find the time for coursework due to my role as a caregiver for my Dad and because I wanted to spend as much time with him as possible. I was managing my courses until he passed away 12 days ago. I was away from Kingston for 7 days and missed classes and assignment deadlines and now need to make up for this. I am trying to concentrate on my required courses but am finding it almost impossible to focus on coursework now that he has died. I have been meeting with a counselor at La Salle since September and will continue to meet with her.
Of the three courses I am currently taking, CISC 320 is the only one that is not required for me to graduate. I am in my fifth year at Queen¿¿s (due to switching Majors in my second year) and as such I do not need to replace this course for the credit. I plan to drop CISC 320 so that I can focus my efforts on my required courses for this term, CISC 422 and CISC 452. Next term, I will take an additional 3 courses to fill all my requirements to graduate in Spring 2017.
