Dear Dr. Johanne Benard:
I am appealing seeking to waive a 21-day appeal deadline with respect to the following three courses I took in the winter semester of 2016: COMM 311, COMM 324, and GRMN 419. The respective Professors in those courses are Prof. Cara Chesney, Prof. Wulin Suo, and Prof. David Pugh.
Due to a combination of a family problem and psychological issues, I was unable to write the finals in the courses I have mentioned. I previously had to defer finals in the Fall 2015 semester and in doing so, submitted medical documentation from my counsellor Tonya Bauermann at the Queen¿¿s Student Wellness Services and was then allowed to complete the finals in the Winter 2016 semester. My grades were updated from IN. In this case, however, I was unaware of the summer term¿¿s role with respect to an IN on my transcript and unaware of Faculty regulations. Thus, I wish to appeal to waive the 21-day appeal deadline in order to submit a second-stage appeal to extend my IN. I wish to write the finals for the outlined courses in the upcoming exam season and have already arranged suitable times with my Professors.
Today, I discussed this issue with academic counsellor Spring Forsberg-Lewis. I told her I felt clueless about the regulations regarding an IN and was thus a bit embarrassed. She advised me to keep this letter short and go into more detail regarding extenuating circumstances in my letter for the second stage of my appeal. Given my desire to write the finals so soon, she told me that I need to submit this first-stage ASAP, wait for approval, and then upon approval, submit the second-stage. I also have documentation from my father¿¿s heart surgeon, which (upon advice from Spring) I will submit with the next stage of the appeal.
Given that I have now read through all regulations with respect to Incompletes and extending them, I feel much more comfortable navigating this realm of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences and my future plan (although I am hoping to graduate this upcoming May) is to be 100 aware of the regulations surrounding an IN and to act with knowledge of these regulations.
