To whom this may concern,
I am writing to you today to request that I be granted permission to drop CHEM 313 after the course-drop deadline. I am requesting this exception be made due to a recent change in my academic plan.
To begin, my academic performance during my tenure at Queen¿¿s University has been quite poor. Despite my best efforts, and those of family and friends, I have been unable to make this city my home. I feel that the lack of acceptance and support that I have received here has played a largely negative hand in my academic performance over the years. My current GPA is 1.633, whereas the minimum requirement is 1.6.
Specific to CHEM 313 - Quantum Chemistry has been an extremely difficult course for me. I have struggled with the material from week one of class - more so than I have in other courses over the years. Even after being tutored in the course 5 - 8 hours a week (in addition to attending class and studying on my own), my performance in the course has been less than satisfactory. I currently hold a 36.3 in the course - largely due to help I have received from my tutor to complete my assignments. I know that despite my best efforts, I will be receiving a failing grade in the course upon completion.
As a result of my poor academic performance over the past four years, I have decided to end my time at Queen¿¿s University sooner than expected. I am hoping to graduate with a BSc in General Chemistry in April 2017, as opposed to pursuing a BScH Chemistry. I have been working extremely hard in my other courses this semester, and believe that my performance in them will be far superior to past years, with the exception of Quantum Chemistry. Having spoken with an Academic Advisor (Anne Petitjean) in early-December, I have confirmed that Quantum Chemistry is not a requirement for my academic plan going forward, and therefore dropping the course will not hinder my ability to graduate.
Keeping both my current grade and new academic plan in mind, I am requesting that I be granted permission to drop CHEM 313 at this time to avoid receiving a failing grade in the course. This will prevent my GPA from being negatively impacted any further, and will play a key hand in my successful graduation in April 2017.
